The Environment Department, Government of West Bnegal was created on 2nd June 1982 to conduct the following business:

  • Looking after the Environment & Ecology.
  • Prevention and Control of Pollution of Air, Water, Land and Noise.
  • Co-ordination between Departments & Agencies of the State and that of the Union Government with policies and schemes relating to environment.
  • And all matters connected with the Bengal Smoke Nuisance Commission and the West Bengal Pollution Control Board.

Headed by Minister in Charge, Environment, the Department has Principal Secretary to the Government as its Administrative in charge, who is assisted by Chief Environment Officer, Senior Environment Officers, Chief Law Officer in technical and legal matters. In administrative functions, Joint Secretary Environment as well as Deputy Secretary and Assistant Secretary provide assistance.
